How Political Campaigns Could Benefit from Marketing Automation and Digital Marketing Tactics

Ah, to live in a swing state. Needless to say, many of the Search Mojo’ers who live in Virginia have been barraged with mailers, emails, phone calls and TV ads over the past year for today’s election. And we didn’t nearly have it as bad in Virginia as they did in Ohio! NBC News reports that nearly $200 Million was spent on campaign ads in Ohio ALONE. This election will have the highest ad spend in the history of our country, with an estimated total advertising spend of well over $700 million.

As marketers (especially in a swing state), we wondered if that advertising investment couldn’t have been better spent. But perhaps marketing automation (and a few digital marketing tactics) could solve many problems for political campaigns.

OK, time to get your geek on. Let’s talk APIs and analytics! This panel featured Nate Griffin of Man of Action Metrics and Dax Herrera of BlueGlass.

Nate said that you have two goals: attribute actual revenue to sources and visualize data for transparency. So how can we do that?

First, build out your own separate application to bring in the analytics data via the API. If you want other data from other applications, such as CRM, bring that into the new application as well.

Pubcon Vegas: Keynote with Leo Laporte

Pubcon kicked off this morning with a keynote by Leo Laporte, who hosts a show called The Tech Guy. He joked about how people don’t like marketers, yet we all market ourselves. The real trick is to market without others realizing it’s marketing. He quoted Edward Bernays, a founder of public relations. Bernays thought that you could convince people psychologially (advertising).  So marketers aren’t popular because they’re seen as tricksters, but the reality is that we must market ourselves.
