One of the New Kids on the Block

July 19th, 2010 by Chris Wilson

Three months ago, almost to the day, I started my new job.  I had been searching for a small business engulfed in technology with a little pizazz and style.  I touched base with one of my old professors from college and she mentioned that I look online at Search Mojo.  A month later I walked in for an interview and something just felt right.  Immediately one could see the drive and passion each employee had for their job.  The blend of personalities along with the friendliness of each employee helps to create the culture that is so apparent at Search Mojo.

My Desk

Well, a few weeks later I found myself sitting at a desk with an adjacent orange wall, a HUGE monitor and all the tech stuff a geek could ever hope for (see picture).  I had accepted the position for the new Director of Technology at Search Mojo.

My roles here range from helpdesk-related troubleshooting to developing and maintaining our internal applications.  However, my favorite aspect of the position is the internal consulting with the other employees to help create services to streamline our processes.

So now I’m sure you’re like “Who is this guy?” so I’ll give you a glimpse into that.  I graduated from James Madison University with an undergraduate degree in Integrated Science & Technology (ISAT).  Sounds crazy, right?  I know, just think of it as a math/science major with a focus in technology.  I stayed around and completed my MBA.  While in grad school I had an internship that eventually turned into a job.  I got married, moved out of my hometown, bought a golden retriever, moved to a house and now I’m here.  Yeah, some other stuff happened in there as well but that’s the quick version.

Now you have a glimpse of what I do and where I’ve been.  It’s a blessing to be here at Search Mojo and I’m looking forward to adding as much value as I can.  Being from the technology-side of things, most of my blog posts will be technology-related or focused on integrating technology into business.  Those are really my two passions – improving efficiency/ streamlining and anything dealing with technology.  Don’t worry, I’ll limit “geek-speak” and try to make everything as straightforward as possible in all my posts.  I definitely try to follow the “KISS” principle.  Catch you in the next post!

Cheers!

#seo411 Recap: SEO Technical Roadblocks

July 13th, 2010 by Amanda Chaney

road block #seo411 Recap: SEO Technical Roadblocks

Earlier this afternoon, we hosted our weekly #seo411 Twitter chat, with today’s subject surrounding technical roadblocks often faced with SEO efforts.  Here’s a quick recap of what you might have missed….

Q1: What technical challenges have you faced with SEO?

Most roadblocks come about when Flash or Javascript is involved.  A lot of people also have issues getting IT departments to cooperate, as well as getting designers to realize that there is a technical side of SEO.  Everyone knows what they know, so sometimes you have to educate teams involved to make progress.  Another big hurdle is working with inflexible Content Management Systems… could cause some problems.

Q2: When you encounter technical SEO issues, how have you solved them?

It’s a good to have enough technical knowledge to articulate the problem and how it should be approached.  In many instances, you will need to work with the IT dept or technical team to resolve the issue. As @JanesvilleSEO jokingly put it: “Leverage those smarter than you.” (more…)

3 Easy Steps to Managing and Fulfilling Client Expectations

June 29th, 2010 by Avelyn Austin

If your company provides a service, it can be difficult to manage and fulfill your clients’ expectations. What you’ll find is that some clients are easy to serve because they don’t ask a lot of questions. So how do you make sure neither scenario occurs in your service company? Easy, you manage and fulfill client expectations from the beginning through the end.  Want to see the 3 easy steps? (more…)

How to Register a Google Places Listing

June 18th, 2010 by Stephanie Nguyen

I sit at my desk with 50 million places in mind, one fresh white vacant search box, and an intense craving for delicately steaming, herbaceous Green Tea. Faced with the abundance of choice in choosing a place to satisfy this craving, chances are, I decide to turn to Google for guidance. Lucky me.

Not too long ago, Google announced that their Local Business Center became “Google Places”, a tool to introduce businesses to the World Wide Web with valuable information on a uniform page with business bios, photos, hours of operation, and reviews. To business owners who haven’t used Google Places, the process can be a little confusing. Is this even necessary? In such a technologically lush culture, companies should take advantage of this tool that could increase their presence and popularity in a local area. Business owners should use this tool with regard to SEO to adjust their business listing, see trends and information on searchers of the business, and attract new customers with a simple internet search. With a submitted Google Place listing, a company can obtain additional local presence in the universal search results and provide additional links to drive prospective customers- no rocket scientists needed.
