Live from SMX Advanced: You & A Keynote with Matt Cutts

<< by Janet Driscoll Miller on June 12th, 2013

To finish off the first day of SMX Advanced, Danny Sullivan held a question and answer session with Google’s Matt Cutts.

Panda Updates

Matt said that there had been an update of Panda about six weeks ago. NormallyPanda updates occur about once per month. They are looking at how to pull some people out of the “grey” zone right now. Panda has almost reached the “steady” state where the updates aren’t as drastic. New Panda data becomes part of the index rolling out new panda updates about ten days out of every month. It’s now a small enough incremental change.

Unfortunately, Sustainable SEO is Slow

<< by Tad Miller on May 20th, 2013

When I was young I made a lot of money on risky high tech stocks in my 401K.  Over the long haul I lost those huge gains, plus nearly everything I’ve invested in them from the start.  The rush of the big gain over the short term was exhilarating, I thought I would be retired in my 50′s…  Obviously, the volatility of the stock market took its toll on my nest egg, but I was young, I at least knew I had time in my life to earn it back.

It was when I saw the impact on the people who were a few years away from retirement that lost almost everything in their 401K and were facing the reality that they likely weren’t going to be able to retire for many years to come, that I realized the need to diversify my investment portfolio.  I realized that big gains in investing were destined to be short term gains (all bubbles must burst).

Team PR Versus Team SEO: Can’t We All Just Get Along?

35486216 Team PR Versus Team SEO: Cant We All Just Get Along?

It’s one thing to make sure your SEO efforts work in sync with your overall marketing plan. Try to integrate it with your traditional PR efforts (which, unfortunately, is silo’ed at many organizations), and chaos could ensue.

For this reason, it’s vital that both teams communicate with each other to avoid future problems arising. Otherwise, before you know it, the SEO team is asking for a link in an article that the PR team has just been in contact with regarding the latest press release. Not only does this add unnecessary extra work, but it also makes everyone look bad and creates an even larger chasm between SEO and PR. Here are some tips to avoid this toxic combustion.

Google’s Disavow Links Tool – Proceed With Caution

<< by Jessica Davidson on November 7th, 2012

Proceed With Caution Googles Disavow Links Tool Proceed With Caution

Matt Cutts, Head of Google’s Webspam team, announced Google’s Disavow Links Tool at PubCon in mid-October (Check out Janet’s post Live From PubCon: State of the Index with Matt Cutts about the announcment). If you have never engaged in artificial link schemes, this tool is not for you. At Search Mojo we have never participated in any spammy backlink schemes for ourselves or clients, but at an agency you may work with clients who before your engagement had employees or worked with an agency that acquired artificial links, even unbeknownst to them. If you encounter this situation, the Disavow Links Tool may be used to remove unnatural links pointing to your site. Just remember to proceed with caution when using this tool.
