If you have separate domains, subdomains or subdirectories for each language variant, you may be running the risk of duplicate content penalties. What this means is without even knowing it, you could be ruining your established rankings for your US site just by having other language translations out there.

Fret not, as there is a simple solution to help Google understand that these should not be seen as duplicate content, but simply as alternate versions of the original: the hreflang link attribute (example shown below).

There’s been a lot of news of late about Google and the practice of building links to improve search engine rankings:

The gist of it all, in my opinion, is that Google seems to be shifting focus from the people who attempt to build links, and instead seems to be focusing on the platforms that allow users to create those links, especially the platforms that allow for easy manufacture of links on a larger scale.

Since the news broke on Friday, it has created somewhat of a panic among SEO practitioners – some even speculating that link building is “dead.”

The specific link building practices that have come under fire include:

  • Press releases (specifically, optimized anchor text in press releases)
  • Guest posting
  • Advertorials

So, is link building actually dead? And what do we do now?

To finish off the first day of SMX Advanced, Danny Sullivan held a question and answer session with Google’s Matt Cutts.

Panda Updates

Matt said that there had been an update of Panda about six weeks ago. NormallyPanda updates occur about once per month. They are looking at how to pull some people out of the “grey” zone right now. Panda has almost reached the “steady” state where the updates aren’t as drastic. New Panda data becomes part of the index rolling out new panda updates about ten days out of every month. It’s now a small enough incremental change.
