Admittedly, I drive my wife absolutely crazy.  I’ve carried my work habits home to my domestic life.  I like to say that I am not a “Plan A” type of guy.  Whereas she is absolutely a “this is ‘The Plan’ and I don’t care if I have to personally force the world go with my plan and make it bend to my personal will – it’s going to happen that way” type of person…which almost always works because her knowledge and instincts are dead-on right.  But essentially, we don’t approach things the same way.

Early on in my professional life I started out as a high school social studies teacher and basketball coach.  I put meticulous planning into my lesson, practice and game plans.  I quickly discovered that whenever you are dealing with kids, that a monkey wrench can quickly be thrown into the way you “planned to do it” – which can completely derail your success.  I kept finding myself making contingency plans in advance (Plan B, C & D) and then just rolling with what works best.

I also discovered in coaching, that I was really pretty good at making adjustments on the fly with strategy.  I could find the opposing team’s weakness, figure out a plan to exploit it and implement it.  I was especially good at doing this after the first quarter of games. Sometimes these tactics lead to slow starts that don’t pan out so successfully early on.  But it’s not like I’m a boxer getting knocked out in the first round.

Adwords Dynamic Remarketing: Advertising That Will Rock With eCommerce

I have been writing a lot lately about features in Google Analytics and Google Adwords that can benefit eCommerce websites (you can check those out here, here, and here), and this post is no different (don’t stop ’til you get enough!).

Whether you work for or own an eCommerce site, you know that increasing revenue and decreasing cost is critical to success. Thankfully, once again Google has created a service that makes it cheaper and easier to target consumers that are most likely to purchase your product; thereby, decreasing your advertising costs and hopefully increasing your revenue. I am, of course, talking about dynamic remarketing for Google Adwords, which was recently released out of beta two months ago. While Google Adwords remarketing (which allows you to exclusively advertise to people who have visited your site) certainly isn’t a new method of advertising to consumers; dynamic remarketing makes it that much easier and cost effective.

ecommerce Wait, its Christmas already? For ecommerce marketers it is...Yes, it’s that time again. The most wonderful time of the year…at least if you’re in retail and/or ecommerce. It’s the proverbial “Christmas in July,” when Santa’s elves begin planning for the biggest shopping season of the year, including the two biggest shopping days of the year for both brick & mortar stores and ecommerce websites: Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

If you’re a marketer in the retail industry and/or for an ecommerce website, then I don’t need to convince you that starting your holiday marketing strategy planning now isn’t an option – it’s a requirement. In order to get a leg up on your competitors and get a piece of the shopping mayhem that ensues post-Thanksgiving (and, let’s not kid ourselves, as early as the day after Halloween), you need to plan everything from product offerings, advertising tactics and media buys to ad creative, website updates and cross-channel strategies…and much, much more. But there may be some opportunities to get in front of consumers and stay top-of-mind during the holiday season that you may not have considered before.
