What Are You Giving #MarketingThanks For?

<< by Kari Rippetoe on November 27th, 2013

marketingthanks What Are You Giving #MarketingThanks For?Ah, Thanksgiving. That one day of the year where we cook, eat, watch football and prepare for the full onslaught of marketing messages that encourage us to BUY MORE STUFF in preparation for the next holiday where we’ll cook, eat and watch football. Hidden amongst all the leftovers and Black Friday ads (and Cyber Monday, oh and Small Business Saturday) is the real reason for the holiday – giving thanks for everything we’ve been blessed with (hence the name THANKS-GIVING).

As a marketer, I think I take for granted the things – the people, the platforms - that ultimately make my job easier. So I decided to tweet about those things with a special hashtag, #marketingthanks, and I asked some of my colleagues to tweet what they were thankful for as marketers. Here are a few of the things we’re giving #marketingthanks for this year (and feel free to tweet a few yourself!):

MOJO MINUTE: 6 Things to Consider for Your 2014 Digital Marketing Budget

<< by Kari Rippetoe on October 23rd, 2013

budget MOJO MINUTE: 6 Things to Consider for Your 2014 Digital Marketing BudgetIt’s really hard to believe we’re already winding down another year. 2013 has been an exciting year in digital marketing, with new and growing opportunities in search, social media and content marketing. 4 in 10 global marketers reallocated their budgets to digital marketing in 2013, and 2 in 3 CMOs shifted 25% or more of their budgets to it this year.

Why the big shift to digital marketing? According to Accenture, CMOs feel the “game-changing” nature of digital warrants a radical change in their organizations’ structure, and their ability to deliver “seamless and relevant customer experiences across all touch points all day and every day”  is absolutely essential to their survival. So, in a nutshell, “Go digital or die.”

Live from B2BLeadsCon: Using Content Marketing to Generate Quality Leads

<< by Kari Rippetoe on August 14th, 2013

B2BLeadsCon logo Live from B2BLeadsCon: Using Content Marketing to Generate Quality LeadsBy now, you’ve likely heard all the hoopla around content marketing, and all the reasons why you should be developing a content marketing strategy to generate and nurture leads. But many hangers-on, especially in the B2B industries, still don’t want to take the plunge into using content as an inbound strategy to generate leads.

According to Marcus Sheridan, who keynoted this morning at B2BLeadsCon, there are many reasons/excuses for this, which include:

  • The “We’re different” mentality, i.e. content marketing won’t work for us because our products/services/sales process/buying cycle is different from everyone else. (Aren’t we all different? Of course – that’s what makes us special! Are you adequately explaining your value and differentiating yourself to your prospects?)
  • They don’t want to give away too much information (aka “The Secret Sauce”).
  • Their products or services are too complex to explain. (Hey, what better use for content marketing, then!)
  • They don’t want to commoditize their services.

But the reality is, in a world where your customers have a treasure trove of information freely available at their fingertips, if you’re not the brand providing the information they’re looking for – you’re dead.

3 Steps to Getting Started with Inbound Lead Generation

<< by Sean McCusty on June 28th, 2013

frustrated man 3 Steps to Getting Started with Inbound Lead GenerationFor many businesses, lead generation is simply a numbers game; contact enough prospects and you’ll eventually uncover someone willing to buy. I spoke with someone in recent months who actually wanted to generate 100 leads per day for their sales force to call – quite a large volume of unqualified people for a small team of salespeople to contact. How many sales did they expect to make that way?

The problem is that this approach can require a significant allocation of resources. Hiring and training enough outbound sales people and purchasing call/contact information can be expensive and time consuming. Not to mention the time is takes to contact a sufficient volume of prospects, conduct a needs assessment, deliver the sales pitch, etc. Unfortunately the result is often a) they don’t need your product, b) can’t afford your product or c) aren’t interested in buying in the foreseeable future. The result: time wasted by you and your prospect.
