Christian Ashlock from Google shared insights on +1 and other insights on promoting content on Google.
He said the problem with most promotion buttons is that it interrupts your stream. If your friend likes something, it enters your Facebook newsfeed. The +1 button, however, is stored and used when you do searches on Google. This means that it doesn’t interrupt your experience, but it shows when you are seeking information about that topic. +1 button also allows users to share certain content with only certain circles if they prefer.
To get the +1 button code, go to google.com/webmasters/+1button.Christian also said that if you have the +1 button on your pages and you are using the canonical tag that the +1s will be credited to the chosen URL in the canonical tag.
And in a plug to start using Schema.org, if you use the markup, it helps Google understand the information you want to share as you define it for when you share it in social media. For instance, you could define a movie’s title, image, description, etc.
He also shared rel=publisher information. Using rel=publisher helps Google protect your brand. Connect your site from your new Google+ business page to enable.
