Preview your page and you’ll be given the option to upgrade early. All pages will automatically be upgraded on March 10.
It’s important to note that most of these options are only available when you’re actually “using Facebook as your Page” – which is number 1 on my list. Overall, my favorite upgrades include using Facebook as your Page, (email) notifications, the ability to interact as a Page or your personal account, Wall filters and the long-awaited iFrame addition.
1. Using Facebook as a Page
After upgrading your page, you’ll see the link to “Use Facebook as _______” seen on the right. As a sidenote, I recommend taking the tour of the upgrade as it does explain things pretty well. When you use Facebook as a Page, you’re able to “like” other Pages, rather than just mark them as “Favorite Pages”. This allows you to easily interact with other industry pages - as your Page.
2. Email Notifications
Once you upgrade a page, you’ll be automatically set up to receive email notifications – however, they go to your email that’s associated with your personal Facebook account.
To review these settings, click on “Edit Info” on your page and navigate to “Your Settings” (the first option). One thing Facebook is missing here is the option to add additional email addresses (just as you’re able to add additional email addresses on personal profiles).
When you’re using Facebook as your Page, your notifications will appear as they do on your personal account. The notifications list out the people who have liked your page or who have interacted and commented on your page. This is a major improvement from what we’ve been used to for so long, but there’s still room for growth here. HyperAlerts will also email you Page notifications, at about an hour delay. With this service you can choose which email you’d like the alerts to email to, which is great if Gmail or your personal email provider is blocked at work.
3. Interact as your personal account or a Page
In the same dashboard as the last, you can choose if you want to have the ability to post to wall of the Page as yourself or the Page when using Facebook as YOU. The setting you’re looking for is “Posting Preferences”. When you’re using Facebook as the Page, you will always post as the Page. This option allows admins to appear on the wall of their Pages as themselves. I see this as a great thing – people like people more than a constant stream of posts by a logo. The drawback to not using your personal account as the default is the Page has none of your friends or Pages you “like” associated with it – therefore, you can’t “@ mention” anyone in the status updates when you’re using Facebook as your Page.
4. Wall Filters
As the notification shows, you can see posts by your Page or Top posts by Everyone. Make sure to check out your default under “Edit Page” then “Manage Permissions”. I’d suggest showing posts by Everyone and have the comments expanded. This area also allows you to filter profanity in posts to your wall and to create a moderation block list. You can also add an age restriction to your Page.
I couldn’t help but think of Saturday Night Live’s Mom filter…
5. FBML vs. iFrames
On March 11, 2011, you will no longer be able to create new FBML apps and Pages will no longer be able to add the Static FBML app. While all existing apps on Pages using FBML or theStatic FBML app will continue to work, we strongly recommend that these apps transition to iframes as soon as possible.
