On Friday, the team and I went to see the new movie, The Social Network, a film chronicling the birth of Facebook. While it is admittedly not a documentary, I was certainly curious to learn more about the Facebook creation saga.

The Social Network turned out to be a much better movie than I expected. Leading up to the movie, Mark Zuckerberg seemed to be nervous or at least very uncomfortable about his potential portrayal in the film. But honestly, I didn’t feel he had anything to worry about. More than anything, The Social Network reinforced how creating Facebook was Zuckerberg’s way, as a socially-challenged student, to become social with others in his own way. Facebook was a way for him to comfortably socialize with others.

Do I believe that Zuckerberg intentionally stole the ideas of others? In reality, I didn’t feel that their ideas were really the same idea as Facebook. Similar, perhaps, but not the same. Others ideas may have been a launchpad with which Zuckerberg then created Facebook.

Overall, the team and I really enjoyed The Social Network. It was a great movie, and while not a documentary, does give some insight into the craziness involved in the creation of the social phenomenon that is Facebook.
