Today I watched Webmarketing123’s webinar “Advanced SEO Webinar: How to Build a Perfect Link Strategy” presented by Travis Low (@TravisLowSEO) and moderated by Michael Turner.  Low presented the webinar in 4 main sections:   Best Practices for Setting Up Inbound Links, How Do I Get Inbound Links?, What Kind of Sites Do I Want Linked to Me?, and How to Avoid Sites Which Will Hurt Your Search Engine Rankings. Here’s what Travis Low had to say:

Best Practices for Setting Up Inbound Links

Setting Up Links:

  1. Keyword/ Keyphrase as the links [Use keywords that you want your site to be found on, don’t use “click here” as the anchor text]
  2. Descriptions supporting the keyword link [Use unique descriptions that accurately describe the information on the page to which the link points]
  3. Don’t target all links to your site’s homepage [Links should point to pages deeper than the homepage]

Great Resources for Inbound Links:

  1. Directories
  2. Paid Listings
  3. Article Syndication
  4. Press Releases
  5. Blogs

How Do I Get Inbound Links?

The Linking Process

  1. Submit a link request
  2. Request accepted or denied
  3. If accepted, link gets listed
  4. Google crawls the page of the link
  5. Start seeing ranking improvement [Low suggested creating a spreadsheet to keep track of the sites where you are submitting your link]

What Kind of Sites Do I Want Linked to Me?

External Sites Linking to You

  1. Sites with domain authority
  2. Sites that are highly regarded by Google
  3. Sites with high page rank [not as important as it used to be]
  4. Sites that are not ‘spammy’
  5. Site where other respectable companies have links there
  6. Sites that have similar content to your site

How to Avoid Sites Which Will Hurt Your Search Engine Rankings

Reciprocal Links

  1. Could be perceived as manipulation of search results
  2. Risk being considered part of a link farm
  3. Links that carry virtually no value
