Mack Collier over at Search Engine Guide is a movie fan after my own heart. He compares social media strategy to the Bourne Series. It’s got great action and adventure! My little area is link strategy and not social media so I’m inclined to pilfer this comparison and apply it to link building.
First, Bourne would assess the landscape. You can do the same thing by surveying your marketplace… Next, Bourne would find out where his targets are, and figure out what they are doing and how they are communicating.
I agree. The way to do that (as applied to link building strategy) can be found in the plethora of diagnosis tools on The Web. Ann Smarty posted about such tools last year. We tend to like the Link Diagnosis tool as it gives a broad picture of what’s going on. It’s definitely not the only tool in the arsenal. It’s always good to have a system of checks and balances so you can get the most accurate picture. No one tool can give you everything, so it’s good to use and compare all available.
Link Diagnosis also has a tool to check the page age to determine whether or not a link from that particular page would be worthy. In addition, they have another tool with which to check the indexing of your site.
To effectively know where your link building campaign should head, you need to both know where you are and also know where your competitors are. For this reason, it’s beneficial to locate your main competitors (or the competitors of your clients) and perform a reasonable dissection of their website(s).
Another interesting tool called the Bad Neighborhood Link Exchange Tool will check the links both internal and external (that your site is linking to, not the reverse). If we can help it, we never want to be linking to a questionable site or be part of a “bad neighborhood.”
Having good backlinks is crucial and as someone who spends a significant portion of time trying to find decent sites from which to backlink, anything that makes that process less painful is good in my book. Niche sites are very hard to find where they don’t require a donation or membership. Try using this Backlink Builder tool to help you focus in on niche link building.
If Page Rank is something you’re also curious about, Rank Inspector is a good tool for viewing page rank of all pages on a particular website.
Finding your strategy after assessing the landscape is the next step.
If you’ve watched the Bourne Identity movies, you know that when Bourne knocks out an enemy, he will often take their radio or cell phone, so he can keep tabs on what they are up to…
This next year, I plan to dive into the strategy more deeply and get to know each and every new aspect (and helpful tools) as it applies to my area so stay tuned for new and exciting things and perhaps more tools!
